How much money is in the world?
The amount of money in the world depends on how you define "money". Here are a couple of ways to look at it:
- Physical Cash: If you only consider physical bills and coins circulating globally, then the estimate is around $8.28 trillion (as of 2021). This figure likely doesn't account for all countries.
- Broader Definition: If we include things like checking and savings account balances, money market accounts, and other easily convertible assets, the number jumps significantly. Estimates for this broader definition, sometimes called "M1 money supply", reach $48.9 trillion (as of late 2022).
- Total Wealth: An even broader definition considers all financial assets, including stocks, bonds, and cryptocurrency. Here, the numbers get much larger. UBS reported total global wealth at $454.4 trillion at the end of 2022.
So, there's no single answer to how much money is in the world. It depends on how broadly you define what counts as "money".
